  9. The three auxiliary power units (APUs) provide power to the Orbiter├òs <a href="text">hydraulic systems</a>. They use liquid hydrazine as a fuel. A gas generator in each APU breaks the hydrazine fuel down into very hot ammonia and hydrogen gas. The hot gas drives a <a href="Glossary">turbine</a>, which in turn powers the main pump of the hydraulic system. The APUs and the hydraulic systems are only used for about 15 minutes during ascent and for about one hour during entry. They aren├òt needed while in orbit.
